Practical 3 Reflections

Were you impressed by google’s search functions/features? Why?

I was more impressed with Google Scholar than Google because the former has more strength as compared with the latter. Even with half of the keywords in summaries of results(versus two third of Google results), relevance to the issue produced by Google Scholar is more focused.

How do you feel about participation in discussion forum? Is it helpful for your research? Do you feel anxious about talking to others you do not know?

I feel more involved in the issue or topic I chose because I can share my opinions and also understand further the people experiencing or had experienced childhood traumas. I had captured the print snapshot of the discussion. As long as I know that the people in the discussion forum are contributing substantial views, I don’t think I have to worry what they might comment on my views.

Why must you do citation and bibliography?

Most importantly, the two processes avoid plagiarism. Stealing someone else’s work is a serious crime and some of us are still ignorant about the seriousness of this issue.

In addition, they are an important feature in any research work.

Besides, acknowledging the source of information is simply the right thing to do.

Due to CCN Day, there was no EIR lesson today. Nevertheless, my classmates and I still have to complete our activity and update our blog. With everyone having their own tight schedule, it is surely better than to attend a make-up lesson.
Today's E-Learning activity is Virtual Shopping Spree on Second Life. I visited Roosa and below are my views on this virtual experience.
a)what products/services are offered
At the doorstep of r800 Bettie’s at Roosa I was captured by a donation signboard “Relay For Life”.
Near the entrance, there was a big sign stressing the point that “refunds and exchanges cannot be given, only replacements”.
The place is divided into two parts with first level selling 1930s-1950s outfits and the second storey offering modern day accessories, furnishings and trends.
b)the shopping environment/ambiance (eg look & feel?)
Upon entering r800 Bettie’s at Roosa, ballad music from the 19030s-1950s were played. The feeling was sophisticatedly lively. The ambience was peaceful and very warm. =)
c)accessibility to the products/services offered (free or chargeable)
The first storey of the shopping place displays women’s dresses and fashion design clothing. It also includes men’s smart elite’s outfits. Both from the 50s.
The second level are presented with Studio Apartment furnishings like “Modern Couch”, different types of boots, current hair trends, ladies’ shoes and 1950s Corset Set.
Bettie’s even recommend it’s customers to THEHATSHOP for those who want to buy 50s hats that goes with Bettie’s outfits and footwear.
To purchase the products, buyers have to subscribe to the Bettie’s Group.

d)user-friendliness & flexibility (eg moving around, adding to your inventory, speed of access, help facilities)
The two-storey shopping place at Roosa makes it easy for anyone to to scan the place.
However, the place only provides staircases. There were no escalators for those who would have difficulty climbing up the stairs. But then again, virtual life never seem to get tired. Haha.

e)people you meet during your virtual shopping
There wasn’t anyone at the shop when I visited the place.
Reflection:
a)How does this experience compare with your E-Shopping Spree on Internet you did in Practical 1&2?

The difference is
i) In Second Life, I get to scan around the shop before I make the decision to purchase my chosen items while
ii) In real E-Shopping Spree, I have to insert the keywords to get what I want. Most of the time, the products called for are far from what I was searching.
The similarity is I have to be careful when spending both for real and virtually. In 2nd Life, players do purchase items using their own real-world money. It is absurd how some are spending on things that they can’t use for real. I guess different people has different level of satisfaction.

b)What have you gained from this e-learning experience?
I realize that imaginary objects like those in Second Life do have similar needs and wants like us even if they have more power to do things. Then again, who's controlling who?
c)What is the one most challenging experience you had?

To take an object.

6) An acoustic guitar. I want to learn to play the guitar. Price: $30. Name: Acoustic guitar
http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/Acoustic-guitar-/190392545649?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_216&hash=item2c5447b171

7) A healthier choice ice-cream birthday cake from Swensens for three of my family members’ birthdays that fall on 5th, 6th and 7th May. It’s my family tradition to celebrate all three members’ birthdays on one day.

Price: $45. Name: 47 Berries Overload
http://www.swensens.com.sg/order.html

Total: $200 + $27.47 + $60 + $24.29 + $100 + $30 + $45 = $486.76
(b) The purpose of the shopping websites I had visited range from bidding items online to selling products at a cheaper price than the market price.

e-bay.com.sg allows online users to bid what items they want starting from reasonable prices. Some of the goods available at this website are used but are still in good conditions. Some are rare artefacts that are hard to find.

amazon.com is very updated in its shipping of merchandises so online buyers are assured that they can get their purchased items as soon as possible. The site is controlled by 6 countries namely Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan and United Kingdom.

soccercorner.com is a US based website and was founded in 1987 with the idea to supply soccer specific product to players, coaches and fans of “the beautiful game”. This website also guarantees users online the shipping time limit of 24 to 48 hours.

swensens.com caters to anyone who is interested to know the promotions and prices of Swensens’ food and desserts. Those who wish to order Swensens’ Ice-cream Cakes online can simply follow the simple instructions found on the website.

( c ) From the above findings and a brief understanding of the online shopping websites I had visited, I learn that

i) I must not be overly excited when I see items online that are selling at a cheaper price than the market price. I have to be aware that the bidding price can mutiply and I would not get my chance of getting the products.

ii) I should not be fooled by the claims that the merchandises are in good conditions. The best way, in my opinion, is to buy the goods only if I have seen them for real. I have to be careful before I make any decisions to purchase online.

iii) I have to check which country or region is controlling the online shopping websites. Security-wise, I believe, is to order things online from a local website. If anything goes wrong, it is easier for me to claim my case with the support of the Singapore Government.

iv) Ordering online makes life easier for this fast-paced modern day society. However, I have to keep the few things in mind before I take advantage of the privileges that we are offered today.
